Made at the Museum: Northwest Selections
January 28 - June 4, 2006
Organized by the Museum of Glass
When the Museum of Glass initiated the Visiting Artist Program, it was with the intention of offering visitors a rare opportunity to witness artists at work in the Hot Shop. Established and emerging artists from around the globe have had the occasion to work closely with the Hot Shop team to experiment and create. A significant number of the invited artists have come from the Pacific Northwest, and the study collection shown here highlights the breadth and depth of local talent as well as the growth of the Visiting Artist Program.
This region has been home to a large contingent of artists, especially those working in glass, for a number of years. When Tacoma native Dale Chihuly co-founded the Pilchuck Glass School with Anne Gould Hauberg and John Hauberg near Stanwood, Washington, in 1971, it wasn't long before many visiting instructors and students decided to settle here permanently. Lured by the temperate weather (especially conducive for glassblowing) and the cultural amenities, an artistic community blossomed that continues to flourish to this day.
Northwest Selections represents a diverse and broad cross-section; artists included range from pioneers of the Studio Glass movement, to emerging professionals, as well as several artists who are known primarily for their work in other media. Each approaches the material with a distinct vision and a particular fervor. Ultimately, though, these artists have much more than geographic proximity in common. All share a passion and appreciation for glass and its boundless potential for self-expression and aesthetic eloquence.
