MOG Blogs Visiting Artists

Birds by Toikka

By Justin Kuravackal, October 3, 2007 | Toikka

Next week (Oct 12-14), famed Finnish designer Oiva Toikka joins us again. His immensely popular Birds by Toikka series for Iitalla are collected worldwide. Several members have told me they watch the calendar for what has become an annual event at the Museum: Bird Lovers’ Weekend. During this residency, Professor Toikka and team will be making a design exclusive to the Museum of Glass, the Red-winged Blackbird. There are several events planned around the residency, from hands-on activities to presentations with real-live birds from Pt. Defiance Zoo.

    Justin,
Are you also of Finnish decent? I missed seeing Oiva last year. I have been back to Finland twice to visit lots of cousins. Everytime I would buy birds and mail them home. This was before I found out that Oiva was a visiting artist. I love my Goldfinch that is signed by him.
Now if someone could just help me with my Finnish speaking…. LOL. I guess I have too strong of an American accent!
I look forward to seeing Oiva this year.

    Hi Shawn,
No, I’m not Finnish, my parents were born in India. But I know what you mean about having too strong an American accent…

It should be a fun weekend. If you liked the Goldfinch, be sure to check out the Red-winged Blackbird in our Store.

    Justin,
Will the MOG post any pictures from the Toikka visit?
