Marc Swanson’s Artist Statement

By Marc Swanson, June 13, 2007 | Swanson, Marc; Artist Statements

My work is heavily influenced by my upbringing in New England.
As the son of an Eagle Scout and marine, the woods and hunting imagery were a large part of my upbringing and enjoyed the experience as a young boy.
But some where in my early teens things changed dramatically I could not wait to get out and go to the big city.
Much of the work deals with this dichotomy rural vs. urban and while expanding to more universal themes as innocence, vulnerability, sexuality, melancholy and the human condition.

My practice seems to swing like a pendulum from very personal narrative autobiographical and figurative work to more abstract work, but all working with generally the same language.

My work ranges from large-scale installations to small-scale discreet objects in a large array of materials.
