MOG Blogs Visiting Artists

day 3

By , June 22, 2007 | Dietrich, Greg

Wow. This has been, and continues to be quite, an experience. We just finished day 3,        2 more to go. I have been engraving graal blanks, then we are blowing them out to their final forms. I am working with imagery that I already engrave in my cameo work at home, but this time they are blown into vessels. They are octopuses, eagle rays, and turtles. I am also working on a “Tacoma piece”, on which I am engraving some of the landmarks of the area. This, if I finish it in time, will be blown out on Sunday, the last day of my residency. I am also taking advantage of the fact that this team LOVES to blow BIG glass. Today we made an octopus bottle that I would guess measures 3 feet in height. I am working as many hours as they let me to pump out these blanks. My part is very time consuming, but by the end, there will be probably 15 vessels blown.   I am honored and thankful to the museum for having invited me. It could be the beginning of a new line of work for me. Time will tell, but either way, I couldn’t be happier. I’ll write more at the end.
