Chicken Feeders?

By Justin Kuravackal, June 29, 2007 | Photos; Rogers, Michael

When Michael Rogers began explaining that one of the forms he was very interested in was a chicken feeder, I had no idea what a chicken feeder looked like.  As his drawing began to take shape on the Hot Shop office white board,  I realized how clever this invention really was.  Of course, Michael is not actually going to feed chickens with what we make in the Hot Shop this week, the chicken feeder form is part of a sculpture that will have a bare tree on the interior and have text engraved on the exterior.

Here are a couple examples of real chicken feeders, the first is stoneware, the second photo is a set of decorative feeders for a garden.

And here’s a shot of Micheal’s sketch on the Hot Shop floor.

The team has made this in 3 parts, first the bottle form and  the “sombrero” on day 1 of the residency, and yesterday, the bare tree.  Micheal will cold work these pieces, including engraving text on them, and then glue them together.
