carmen vetter
fading gray: patterns on polarization
February 14 - March 8, 2009
Opening Reception: Saturday, February 14, 4 - 7 pm
Traver Gallery is pleased to introduce Portland artist Carmen Vetter. Her first show with the gallery, Fading Gray: Patterns on Polarization explores the Chinese concept Yin-Yang - a mutual correlation between opposites, expressing the possibility of unity amidst stark contrast.
Beginning as “an expression of frustration over social and political polarization,” Fading Gray, says Vetter, “is an investigation of the beauty in the paradoxical. In the end, this is much more about what unites rather than divides.”
Vetter has been working with kiln-formed glass since 1999. By layering varying textures of frit and powdered glass in multiple firings, she creates bas-relief wall panels with hypnotic designs. “I am interested in the juxtaposition of opposites: give and take; push and pull. The dynamics of relationship are an ongoing theme in my work.”
Carmen Vetter attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and was awarded a six-month mentorship with Neil Ward-Robinson at the ISIS Gallery and Institute in Essex, England. She has also participated in various workshops at the Bemis Center in Omaha, NE, and at Bullseye Glass in Portland, OR.
