Bertil Vallien
, a prominent figure in Swedish glass community and master sandcaster, returns to the Hot Shop this week. His previous residencies were in 2003 concurrent with an exhibition of his work in the galleries and in 2005 for a special event.

Bertil’s residency coincides with his receiving the prestigious Libensky Award this week, established by the Pilchuck Glass School, Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery, and Czech artists Stanislav Libensky (1921-2002) and Jaroslava Brychtova in 1997. The prize acknowledges extraordinary artistic talent and high achievement in the world of contemporary glass art.

Past award recipients include: Dale Chihuly, Dan Dailey, Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova, Flora Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick, Richard Marquis, William Morris, Ginny Ruffner, Italo Scanga, Lino Tagliapietra, Cappy Thompson, Benjamin Moore and Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend.

Voyage-03, 2003, a gift to the Museum from Bertil’s first residency is on view in the Hot Shop as part of Made at the Museum, an ongoing exhibition of the Visiting Artist Collection.
