Hot Bits: Most Memorable Glass Item

By MOG Docents, October 27, 2008 | Docents & Volunteers

Karen Lewis: When my family decorated our Christmas tree long ago, there was an ornament made in the early 1940’s, when metal was not available. The ornament has a paper hangar instead of the usual metal that we have today. It is very simple with just a few lines of color wrapped on colorless glass. I still have that
ornament, which I found when I cleaned out my mother’s things after she passed away. When I see it, I have many happy memories of tree decorating.

Mary Talbo: My most memorable glass items were the McDonald’s Muppet glasses you used to get w/ happy meals……HAH!!! I’m sure that you can probably find them in thrift stores now.

Barb White: As a child we moved around quite a bit. With four kids and a dog, my parents were never quite willing to continually pack and unpack glass items that were doomed to get broken eventually (if not through the move than definitely by an overzealous child). My mom did, however, manage to haul around a set of glass grapes, pears, and apples made of heavy bubbly glass. She has them to this day and all four of us view them as a symbol of her resiliency through 20 years of hopping around this great big country of ours.
