A Fun Weekend Getaway

As docents, we spend much of our time at the museum watching various artists blow glass in the Hot Shop and giving tours of the galleries. I have often sat in the Hot Shop thinking about how fun it would be to make my own glass art. Last May, my husband and I had the chance to do just that at the Jennifer L. Sears Glass Studio in Lincoln City, Oregon.

The process was not only fun but educational. My husband was able to craft a float, and I made a starfish. We were able to choose from a wide variety of colors, and experiment in creating different patterns so our projects would be unique. While making your artwork, a trained glass artist stays nearby. They make recommendations and help out when requested. It makes for a satisfying experience.

You can make a variety of glass objects from bowls to paperweights to vases. The entire process takes around 30 minutes. Prices start at $75.00 and go up to $200.00 per piece. Children as young as eight can participate with parental supervision. Artwork is available to take home on the following day, and if you are unable to stop by your project can be shipped to you.

The gallery requires that all “artists” wear closed toed shoes. They also recommend not wearing baggy tops or clothing made out of fleece for your safety in the studio.

After finishing your glass make sure to visit the Volta Gallery across the street. It is filled with beautiful glass art available for purchase.

The studio is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00am to 6:00pm. It is closed on all major holidays. For reservations call 541-996-2569. Reservations are recommended as space fills up fast. The studio is located at 4821 SW Highway 101 at the south end of Lincoln City. Lincoln City is approximately five hours southwest of Tacoma.
