What is a safe distance for visitors to view art in the galleries?

If a visitor is injured what is the procedure for docents to follow?

What safety procedures should be followed if an earthquake occurs?

What happens if there is a power outage?

What happens if there is a fire alarm?

Answers:

The general safe distance rule to view art in the gallery is “an arm’s length.”

Docents are to report all accidents/injuries to the Security or Admission staff. Be accurate and concise on location and details. The Security Staff is trained to respond to medical emergencies.

If you are inside during an earthquake:
Watch for falling objects. Help visitors move away from all glass, overhead fixtures and art. Go to the center of the building. Security will assist the injured.

If you are outside during an earthquake
:
Stay outside. Move away from the building. Security will assist the injured.

AFTER an earthquake: Be prepared for aftershocks. Everyone needs to leave the building. Do not use elevators. No smoking (there could be glass line breaks). Do not go back into the building until directed to do so.

In a power outage: Security Staff will evacuate visitors and staff in the Galleries and Prep Room (to prevent vandalism or theft). The Hot Shop will be evacuated because the electric fans will not be working. The Director will decide about the remainder of the building. The Security Staff is responsible for moving through the building to insure that staff and visitors are safe and to give further instructions.

When there is a fire alarm building evacuation is mandatory. Exits are posted and the Security Staff will direct the evacuation. Do not use elevators.
