Glass on the Water

Summer is here and beachcombing is a popular past time in our coast region. A notable item to look out for is the glass fishing float. Glass floats have been used by European and Asian fisheries for well over 80 years, possibly more.

In recent times due to the less costly and readily available plastic floats being produced, the use of glass ones became a thing of the past. When they were in use, many of these glass floats would break loose from the nets and float across the ocean. (Imagine the stories these fragile little sojourners could tell). Nowadays, they are commonly beachcombed allover the Pacific.

What is your favorite glass item when you were little and why?

Was it a Christmas ornament? Was it your set of marbles? Was it your first pair of candle stands? Send your responses to Barb White and they will be published next issue.
