Discussion: Tiffany’s Stained Glass Joseph

By Mary Talbo, March 18, 2008 | Learn About Art, Docents & Volunteers, Discussion

Here’s a great question that came up this weekend. Many people ask how did Tiffany get Joseph to look so “real” or “human” in his stained glass window (in the Contrasts exhibit). And I understood that the face and body were painted on the glass. Was it painted on using the grisaille technique, or can anyone elaborate on that part of the process? Thanks.

Fellow docents, while there’s little information about this piece, it is speculated that this window may have been commissioned by a wealthy family to memorialize a young loved one. However, stay tuned. Perhaps the Tiffany Foundation may provide insight. Nonetheless, the technique seems very much like grisaille. Monochrome gray shades……a representationf of relief sculpture…..painted enamels?
