The Glass Eye Peeps Over the Glass Edge

The ending of one years and the beginning of another seems like tan appropriate time for some quiet reflection of our past and future experiences as docents. There is going to be a new docent training class held next month that will bring new faces and energy to the docent program. We are eagerly looking forward to welcoming them.

Looking back, we became aware of what docents identified as working well in the program through the docent survey. The positive relationships established between docents themselves as well as with the Education Department are important and integral parts of a vibrant successful program. Strengthening communications is one of the objectives identified by the Docent Council this year. Establishing an active docent advocate system, final exit interviews, and annual performance reviews are a few of the plans to improve our program.

While recalling the past and looking forward, each of us can work to strengthen the lines of communication at the Museum by attempting to obtain accurate and pertinent information. To avoid the subtle dangers caused by misinformation, rumors or gossip, we can seek an answer or a clarification of what we heard. Misinformation can dramatically after any reality, creating a negative and pervasive environment. Let’s work to stamp out misinformation before it develops a life of its own, undermining trust and respect as well as changing boundaries.
