The Glass Eye on a Docent New Year’s Resolution

By admin, June 1, 2004 | General, The Glass Eye

This month the retro focus of The Glass Eye harkens back six months to when New Year’s resolutions are just a gleam in most people’s eyes.

This particular resolution was one of those that is easier to resolve than to bring to fruition. It began when several docents were lamenting their need for midwinter exercise and resolved to walk weekly beginning in January. The germination of the idea may have been influenced by the beauty and simplicity of Michael Kenna’s photographs in the gallery.

Six months and many miles later the docents look forward to their own moving through nature on Thursday mornings. Observing the landscape metamorphosing into spring has provided the accompaniment to the communication and companionship that now bonds the walkers through the wind, rain, and sun. It has become more than a walk in the park as new personal pathways have been explored and taken by some of the docents.

Anyone who is interested in joining the walk is invited to come along whenever possible. There is no commitment to walk every week. Hopefully there are always at least two people who show up so no one ever has to walk alone! This is a low-key unstructured walk within your personal comfort zone and without a definitive pace or length—fast, slow, moderate—whatever works, works. Wright Part and Ruston Way have been the weekly byways, but there are plans afoot to walk at Point Defiance, Nature Center, Nisqually, Gig Harbor as well as other nearby walking trails. If you are interested in walking call, Dee Smethurst or Maureen Drucker. Happy midyear resolution trail to everyone!
