Museum of Glass Receives $150,000 Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services
Tacoma, Wash. (July 26, 2006)— The Museum of Glass: International Center for Contemporary Art is pleased to announce a $150,000 grant award from the Washington D.C.-based Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in support of the Museum’s Science of Art program. The mission of IMLS is “to grow and sustain a ‘Nation of Learners’ ” by providing funds to the country’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Museum’s grant was awarded under the 2006 Museums for America program which includes grants for 177 institutions totaling $16,955,577.
“We are extremely honored to receive this very generous award,” said Museum Director Timothy Close. “Science of Art is one of our core education programs and this funding will help us expand the programming to reach more students.”
Science of Art is an innovative interdisciplinary program that uses glass as an educational medium for teaching math and science to middle and high school students. Since the program’s inception in 2002, more than 5,200 students have participated.
“With the IMLS funding, we will be able to create a mobile hot shop that will travel with educators and artists to schools that are unable to come to the Museum,” commented Susan Warner, director of education for the Museum. “The program’s web presence and curriculum library will also be expanded. We are extremely happy.”
The Museum of Glass is one of five museums in Washington State to receive IMLS funds this year.
